The occurrence of a troublesome event is uncertain, and the breaking down of your car in the middle of the road on a day when you have urgent work, or when you can’t wait to get back home on a tired day is one of the most annoying situations you don’t want to get into. Your car may break down in the middle of a highway, or in the middle of a congested road. Here is what you should do.
Highway
When you first realise that you are going to have a tough time with your car, take your foot off the accelerator very gently and smoothly. Make sure not to brake hard or suddenly. Carefully work your vehicle on the side of the road. If you are on the interstate, try to reach an exit. Give proper signals to the vehicle drivers around and behind you. Make sure you make your car visible; use emergency flashers; at night turn on the interior dome light of your car.

Busy Road
As mentioned above, when you realise that something is about to go wrong with your vehicle, try to get on the side of the road as quickly as possible. If it is evening or night, keep the interior lights on so that you are more visible. Secure a white cloth or paper on the window from the outside to alert other drivers that your vehicle is in trouble and that they should proceed around you. Make sure never to work on your vehicle from the exposed side of the traffic. This opens up a risk of being hit by a passing vehicle.
