Car breakdowns always happen when you least expect it. Whether it’s when you’re on your way to work, or on the way to pick the kids up from school, it’s always inconvenient. While you can’t plan for a breakdown, there are things you can do to stay safe while help arrives.
1. Pull over
The first step is always finding a safe spot to pull over. If you’re on a motor way, try to make it to an emergency breakdown lane or on smaller roads, look for a wide section of road without yellow line markings.
2. Hazard lights on
As soon as you are safely stopped, switch on your hazard lights. If it’s dark or there’s poor visibility you can also raise your bonnet and turn on your parking lights.
3. Exit your car
Before you exit your car, check that it is safe and that there is no incoming traffic. Make sure you have your car keys and then shut the door behind you. If you can, always exit from a door that is facing away from traffic.
4. Stand clear
Once you are outside of your car, make sure you are aware of your surroundings. Stand clear of the road and try to stand behind a safety barrier if possible. Unless completely necessary, do not cross busy roads.
Stay inside if necessary
If it’s unsafe, skip steps 3 and 4 and stay in your car. Move to the passenger seat if possible.
Call for assistance
If you have been in an accident, call the police and ambulance service and if possible, exchange details with other drivers involved in the collision. If you are dealing with a car breakdown, then simply call a professional towing service. Wait until help arrives and try to stay calm.
