5 common causes of car breakdowns

Whether your car won’t start, or its simply conked out mid drive, there are numerous reasons your car may have broken down. At Tows 2 Go we have seen every kind of car breakdown, but some are more common than others. So, to help you out, here are 5 common causes of car breakdowns from our towing experts.

Dead battery

If your car won’t start, then odds are it’s a dead or low battery. Car batteries generally have a lifespan of 3-5 years, but this can be less if you drive in extreme temperatures (such as the scorching heat of the Gold Coast). Some common signs of a dying battery are also dim headlights or slow functioning power windows. Get your battery checked regularly to avoid losing power completely.

Flat tyre

Flat tyres are usually caused by running over a sharp object, hitting a deep pothole or a fault in the valve stem of your tyre. Even a sharp stone can puncture your tyre if your tyre is already worn or damaged. Always keep a spare tyre on hand for emergencies.

Broken or worn spark plug

Your spark plug ignites the air-fuel mix in your engine which get the pistons going and are essential to your ignition system. Over time your spark plug can wear out or break down completely. You should have this checked by your mechanic regularly to avoid possible complications.

Starter motor faults

Your starter motor is an electrical device that sends an electrical charge to the starter solenoid, which then sends charge to the motor that cranks the engine. If you turn your key in the ignition and the engine turns over but won’t start, you may have an issue with your starter motor.

Failing alternator

Your alternator works with the battery to generate power for the electrical components of your car. It also recharges your battery by utilising energy produced by the engine, so if your car is constantly experiencing battery issues you may have a faulty alternator.
